Our school is a ten-year old private primary school in Rize-Turkey. (Rize is one of the smallest provinces of Turkey on the Black Sea coast but also one of the most important since it is the tea-industry center with processing and packing factories. The city is built in an area where the bright green tea bushes cover entire mountainsides. Anzer honey is rarely found which comes from the mountains around. People do heliski (helicopter skiing) on the mountains of Kackar.)

Our school is the most modern school in Rize and it is full of happy, socialized and successful students. Their ages are 6-15. School starts at 8:30 am and finishes at 15:30 Monday to Friday, 7 hours of lesson each day. Lunch is given at school between 12:00 and 13:00.

The pupils of our school have been learning English since pre-elementary school. We try to make them fluent while speaking. We want our pupils to learn European culture and discipline. We want to take part in Comenius projects. We have some ideas about that project. For example we can start to write a story and our Comenius partner may continue it. In the end, there will be a story. Our pupils will visit each other and perform their story as a play. Or there can be a project concerning about the four seasons of our area. We can observe the seasons in our country and our Comenius partner may also observe their country’s seasonal changes. We can make a presentation showing the differences and similarities between two countries.

Why Comenius?

We have been involved in many national activities and bilateral cooperation programmes. For example, we are the member of the “Turkish Private Schools Association”. Every year a pedagogue comes to our school and makes a seminar to our school’s parents about how to educate their children at home. Prof. Dr. Doğan Cüceloğlu and Prof. Dr. Haluk Yavuzer are the names that have visited so far. Our teachers and principals always take part in such seminars in Istanbul. A panel discussion took place in Rize University about the educational problems in Rize.

Besides, we cooperate with TEMA (“TEMA Foundation has started its first EU supported project according to the contract signed on 24th of December in Ankara with EU Central Finance and Contracts Unit. “Creation of Employment by Providing Training on Bee & Honey Production for Unemployed in Artvin” is a one year Project”) about combating soil erosion, for reforestation and the protection of natural habitats.

Other national programmes are the kermis (pupils sell what they cook and they buy a TV or DVD player to their classroom), we collect used papers and food wastes and re-cycle them.

We teach English as a foreign language and we want them to use it fluently. We use lots of materials in order to improve their English level. We use DVDs, CD-ROMs, audio CDs, readers, etc. And if we have the chance to meet our pupils with other countries’ pupils, they will try to speak English fluently. There will be a cultural exchange. Pupils and parents will realize how important is to learn English and European vision.

In addition, in the modern world, pupils should learn the European discipline and adapt themselves to the European culture when they are young in order to take part in this world and tell their culture to the others. We want them to see the big picture.
